Specialty Motors Marks 40-Year Anniversary with Renewed Growth

Santa Clarita, CA-based provider of fractional horsepower motors celebrates 40-year anniversary with trending growth and U.S. patent award.

June 4, 2012 (Santa Clarita, CA) – Specialty Motors, Inc. (SMI) has reached its 40th anniversary as a supplier of fractional horsepower electric motors for customized applications. The milestone is marked by trending growth and the recent awarding of a U.S. patent for the company's top-selling integrated motor + controller product.

Specialty Motors' current growth trend is a welcome sign after the recent recession. "The recession was a challenge but it helped us restructure costs and develop a focused new business strategy," remarks Brad Spahr, CEO. The company has since commanded sales growth of 70 percent and, just last month, Specialty Motors was awarded a U.S. patent for its simple, integrated motor + controller technology, a motion solution that has become the company's biggest seller.

With in-house capabilities that rival some of the largest companies in the industry, Specialty Motors has earned a reputation for quick response, short lead times for small volume runs, and close customer interaction throughout all phases of design and production.

SMI's approach provides efficiently built custom-engineered motors to small- and mid-size companies and this method accounts for the company's current growth trend, as does the development of low-cost, high-quality off-shore production sources to supplement in-house manufacturing capabilities.

"In areas where we once could not compete, we now come out ahead, having developed high-tech propriety products to penetrate new markets," says Spahr.

Established in 1972 in the San Fernando Valley to provide electric motor parts to the appliance industry, SMI relocated in 1999 to the Santa Clarita Valley where they still reside. In 2006, partners Brad Spahr and Gary Cusumano bought SMI from Fisher Scientific Corporation. The company now employs 26 people.

SMI also prides itself on maintaining a very strong local presence. Spahr himself is teaching a seminar for Veterans at College of the Canyons, helping them identify marketable skills and develop job strategies for the civilian business world. Future leaders and innovators are also a focus of this historic company. "SMI is participating in a mentoring internship program for high school students in the Hart School District who are interested in engineering. One of our engineers teaches the interns basic engineering skills including how to tear down and rebuild motors, read blueprints, measure parts, compare engineering tolerances, and test motors against performance specifications," says Spahr.
